First Circular, January 2007
On behalf of the International Association for Word and Music Studies, Peter Dayan and Mary Breatnach (as local organisers) are very pleased to invite you to Edinburgh, for the Association’s sixth biennial conference, with the special theme of Self-reference in Literature and Music and a Word and Music Studies Forum.
The Conference has been scheduled to take place during the Edinburgh Festival (more on the Festival below), and we expect that delegates will want to take full advantage of this. Therefore, no activities are scheduled for the evenings, except for receptions that delegates can slip away from.
The conference sessions will be held in the Wolfson Suite, in Edinburgh University Library, with one exception: we have planned, for the early evening of Friday 17 August, a session including a performance of songs by Lawrence Kramer, in the seminar room of the School of Scottish Studies. Both these venues are in George Square.
The Wolfson Suite has facilities for PowerPoint (there is a PC in the room), OHPs, DVDs, and audio CDs.
The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, where the opening reception will be held, is very close to George Square. Detailed directions will be given in a subsequent circular; meanwhile, a map can be consulted on the Edinburgh University web site at http://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/central-area/
The conference excursion will be to Traquair House, the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. As well as a tour of the house and its lovely gardens, our visit will include tasting, and an opportunity to purchase, the ales made in the house’s tiny but famous brewery. For more information on Traquair, see http://www.traquair.co.uk/.

They are located within a mile of George Square, of the Festival Theatre (which is Edinburgh’s main opera house), and of the Queen’s Hall (the main venue for chamber music concerts), at the edge of Holyrood Park, which is the largest park within the boundaries of any city in Europe, and is dominated by the craggy hill known as Arthur’s Seat.
Rates (including breakfast, which is served from 7.30 am):
Single standard room £36 per night
Single en-suite room £50 per night
Double en-suite room £79 per night
All bookings will be handled by Linda Murray, of Murray Accommodation. (There is a £5 booking charge.) Please contact her via the following link:
http://www.murray-accommodation.co.uk/wmsinfo.htm
She can also advise on hotel rooms, and bed and breakfast elsewhere in the city; but these are likely to be relatively expensive, and early booking would be necessary. Any special requirements (e.g. dietary, for breakfast, or for delegates with reduced mobility) should be signaled to her at the time of booking.
Other costs
There is no conference fee for WMA members; for non-members (apart from postgraduate students), there will be a fee of £10. For the lunch and high tea provided on the Friday, there will be a single charge to delegates of £15. (There will be vegetarian options at both meals on the Friday; please inform us if you have other dietary requirements.) This will be payable, by cash or cheque, on registration. The outing to Traquair House, which is of course optional, will cost £32 per person; this includes transport from George Square to Traquair House and back, late lunch in the 1745 Cottage Restaurant at Traquair (but not drinks with the lunch), admission to the house and gardens, and ale tasting, in the brewery itself or the dining room. Please note that while we will not be collecting payment for the meals and excursion before the conference, if you book them by returning your registration form, we, and therefore you, will have to pay for them whether you actually come or not.
